On this beautiful night, every seat was a good seat. There was enough wind to drive us, but not so much to make us cold or uncomfortable. The sail started out in light winds, and then the evening breeze filled in just before sunset . You could see it coming from the north. Initially it was just a narrow patch of dark water across the horizon. When the ruffled waters got within a half mile, the boat began to move. The sail on a 90′ mast feels it first. It was just enough to drive us for awhile at 9k.
The late evening breeze has a playful sense of timing. At the end of the day on Puget Sound the thermal wind often dies. So you decide to return to port or your mooring buoy. Then just when you get the boat half packed up for the evening, the evening breeze springs up inviting you to go for more sailing. After all there is still plenty of light left to enjoy the twilight.
In our case we were out on the water and available for its embrace.
