Spoiler alert the answer is yes. I’m training to complete the Inman Mile and this is a training workout working towards that goal.
The Inman Mile is carrying 1.5x your bodyweight for one mile, non-stop. This was 1.13X my bodyweight (180 lbs / 205 lbs) for one mile non-stop.
A true Inman Mile is done using a straight bar, held on your back like for squatting), but because I want to have functioning shoulders after doing it, I’m using a Marrs Bar instead (which sits more like a backpack).
Now, I didn’t catch the actual carry on video because I wanted to focus on the carry. I knew this was going to be a challenge as it was about 40 lbs more than I’ve ever carried for a mile non-stop before (did 165 lbs about a month ago).
When I do these, most of my warm up is Post-Activation Potentiation using a much heavier load. I’ve got 475 lbs on the bar to start. I just did 4 sets of static holds of about 30 to 40 seconds at a time.
This not only activates the nervous system at a higher threshold, it compresses and prepare the connective tissue for the loading.
The practical result is that when I take those 270 lbs of extra plates off, it feels like I’ve got almost nothing on my back when I start the carry (yep, it really DOES feel like nothing).
That feeling lasts about 1/3 of a mile… but every little bit helps.
How I do these carries is up and down the street in front of my house. To the end of the block and back is exactly 1/3 of a mile so it’s easy for me to know how far to go and gauge where I’m at.
The second third of the mile wasn’t too bad, though as I was coming into that 2/3 of a mile turn I was starting to question my life choices.
The most challenging part of this carry for me now is not the traps…I’ve actually trained them to fully stretch and relax down… they don’t get pumped or sore or anything even after this time under load.
The worst part is the constant compression on the upper back. I had to dig in to get that last 1/6 of a mile (though because of how I do this, after making the turn, I’m committed.
1.5X BW will be a BIG challenge.
