Derrick and I used to live off store-bought meals, ramen noodles, pepperoni and wraps, and pre-packaged oatmeals when backpacking. This was the easiest option for us at the time and we don’t consider ourselves “foodies” so we generally didn’t mind the redundancy. This year, we made a goal to prepare and package more of our own meals when on the trail! This helps us know exactly what is in our food and be able to be creative when recreating meals we enjoy that we can dehydrate.
This was one of out first attempts of dehydrating a meal that wasn’t just simple ingredients. I ended up finding a recipe for Chicken and Dumplings, in hopes of recreating the @mtnhouse Chicken and Dumpling recipe that we ADORE. We haven’t perfected our recipe yet, but it was a great starting point for our dehydrator meal journey! In the future when I make this recipe again, I will definitely make the dumplings MUCH smaller to help them dehydrate and rehydrate faster.
We ordered a pack of mylar bags off Amazon that allow us to not only store our dehydrated food, but we can add boiling water right to the bag to avoid any dirty dishes! Our dehydrator and mylar bags are linked in our Amazon storefront in our bio!
The recipe I chose was low-fat which dehydrates better than high fat meals, but you could definitely add additional fat sources such as olive oil once rehydrated on the trail!
What recipe should we try next!
