Can I carry 235 lbs for a mile non-stop?

マイル

Yoke Bar Carry 235 lbs for 2/3 of a mile non-stop (so that’s a no, for now:). This was a progress check workout, in addition to being a training session. It’s also great endurance work for badminton training… 😉

My ultimate goal with this carry training is to do the Inman Mile…which is carrying 1.5 X your bodyweight for 1 mile non-stop. At my current bodyweight of around 175 lbs, that’ll be between 260 to 265 lbs, depending on the weigh in.

This is a modified version of the Inman Mile in that I’m using a yoke bar (Marrs Bar) for this and not a straight bar. A straight bar would absolutely destroy the shoulders because of the position and how the bar slides down, so I opted for this bar instead and it works GREAT for it.

I’ve been working heavy carries, supports and partials for more than a year now (once a week) to work towards it.

So this was a test to see how close I am to it… and I’ve still got a ways to go. At the half mile mark, with 25-30 lbs less, my lungs were just getting crushed.

This wasn’t a matter of mental fortitude, either… I can tell when it’s my mind giving in or my body saying no, and this was my body telling me another 1/3 of a mile wasn’t going to happen.

After thinking about it, I’ve determined that my original idea of doing it as fast as possible isn’t the best way to go.

By trying to do that, it forces my breathing muscles to work harder and they fatigue faster. As well, to walk faster, I have to lean forward, which puts even more pressure on the breathing muscles.

So next thing to test is taking short but regular breaks stopping and just standing (still under load, mind you) in order to take pressure off the lungs and recover a bit. This is where my “relaxing under load” training should pay off (basically letting the skeleton and connective tissue take most of the load and let everything else relax).

Now, just in general, long distance loaded carry training is INCREDIBLE for fat loss and cardio. It’s worth trying, if you want to test yourself (don’t start with this insanity, though).
