This is not a concept animation. After the devastating 2011 tsunami, Japan undertook one of the most ambitious engineering projects in modern history: a network of massive sea walls stretching nearly 250 miles along its vulnerable coastline.
But it’s more than just concrete. The project also included huge afforestation efforts to create “tsunami forests”—a living, green wall of millions of trees designed to absorb the initial energy of the waves before they even reach the man-made barrier.
